Even though it’s important to have a balanced diet throughout your life, it’s especially important during your retirement years. You will need to incorporate a variety of nutrients that can strengthen your bones, help your digestive system, and improve your organ function.
This video answers some important questions about choosing the right kinds of food at supermarket. It also shows how you can find convenient, frozen meals that are high in nutritional content. If you aren’t able to get to the grocery store on your own, you can often find a supermarket that will bring your groceries to you.
If you come to San Clemente Villas, an assisted living community, you’ll have easy access to all the nutrients you need. Find out more about San Clemente Villas by the Sea by calling us at (949) 485-4028.

As many seniors age, they have difficulty participating in the same physical activities as when they were young. This realization can cause individuals to become discouraged from exercising, and eventually lead to more physical health problems. By moving to a retirement community, you could open yourself up to a number of low-impact exercises that will help you stay healthy and lower your risk of suffering an injury:
Dancing is a great social activity that can also keep you physically fit. In addition to being fun, dance classes are an effective cardio workout and strength training activity. When you participate in regular dance lessons at an assisted living community, you can greatly improve your balance, coordination, and agility. This will help you accomplish other daily activities without suffering a dangerous fall-related injury.
As strange as it may sound, video games such as Wii Fit are a very effective way for seniors to get regular exercise. This low-impact game console has a number of activities to choose from, including bowling, tennis, yoga, and skiing. Since it is played indoors in the comfort of your own living room, it allows you to participate in these fun activities without putting yourself at risk. This video game also can keep track of your weight and fitness level, allowing you to monitor your progress each time you play.
Swimming is one of the lowest impact physical activities you can participate in and still achieve amazing health benefits. Swimming laps each day builds strength in your arms and legs without damaging any of your body’s joints. If you’re looking for an activity with more socialization, you can participate in your retirement community’s upbeat water aerobic or aqua jogging classes. These classes are a fun way to achieve a total-body cardio workout with your friends.

As you enter your senior years, eating gets a bit trickier. For example, you may find that you’re less hungry than you used to be. If fact, most people need fewer calories as they age. Even if you find that your appetite hasn’t changed, you need to consider restricting your calories and making healthier choices to prevent weight gain. Here are some dietary tweaks you can make to stay healthy and maintain your active senior lifestyle:
A balanced diet that sticks closely to the USDA’s MyPlate diagram is a good place to start for most seniors. If you have health conditions that impact your diet, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney problems, talk to your doctor about making changes that better accommodate your needs. Tuft University’s Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging has devised a food pyramid for seniors over 70 to follow.
There are a number of nutritional supplements aimed at senior citizens—but unless there is some health reason that prevents you from eating normally, try to get the bulk of your nutrition from whole food sources. You should watch out for popular protein supplements marketed toward seniors; these are more fattening and expensive than natural protein sources and not as good for you. Also, using these to replace your meals can overtax your kidneys.
During your senior years, as your calorie needs changes, you need to be more diligent about your caloric intake. Since you need fewer calories to maintain your weight, you can’t get the nutrition you need if you use up this decreased calorie limit on sweets and fried foods. Replace your less nutritious foods with ones that give you plenty of health benefits and fewer calories. Fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains all fall into this category. Talk to your doctor about good food choices.
The active lifestyle of the seniors at San Clemente Villas by the Sea helps them beat weight gain. Our kitchen also cooks up gourmet, healthy meals to ensure our senior residents get the right balance of nutrition. Learn more about our assisted living community by calling (949) 485-4028.

The best staff, food and activities out of all the other local communities. Just visit and talk to the seniors who live there. Many have lived in other places and they all told me that the Villas has the most personality. They attribute it to the private ownership and the fact that the owners are in their community daily.
